WDS Setup Tutorial

WDS 101 Setup Tutorial

why WDS? so you can wirelessly link upto 4 routers or access points (APs) to extend the range of your wireless connection.
for simplying the process of creating this tutorial

1. i have 2 of the same APs (EAP150by EnGenius. in theory, any two router or APs with WDS mode enabled will work.

2. you’ll need a router, 1 ethernet cable, power source for the these units, and a laptop.

now that we have everything, let’s get started:

we need the default ip address, login/password, usally found printed on packaging. If not, look in the quick start manual.

connect one of the APs to the laptop using the ethernet cable, on your laptop, navigate to Local Area Network, right click on local area connection, go to properties, select tcpipv4, click on properties, in the general tab, match the ip range of the AP. for example, if your AP is defaulted to have 192.168.1.1, then you would punch in 192.168.1.21 for the ip address, 255.255.255.0 for the subnet, and 192.168.1.1 for the default gateway. leave the dns stuff blank and click ok.

bring up the browser, type in the default ip address of the AP, you’ll see a prompt that asks for the login and password of the AP, punch in the default login/password.

once you’re in the setup page, let’s choose the WDS mode, in this case WDS AP mode because i want the APs to braodcast WiFi.

in the next step, set a static IP address for the AP. this step makes it easy if you ever want get back to re-configuration AP. Repeat this same step for all the APs, be sure to assign a different ip address on each of the APs on the same network range.

set the name of the your WiFi (can be different per AP).

select the WiFi channel (this channel# has to be the same for all APs)
set security of the WiFi, which can be WEP, WPA or a mix of WPA/WPA2 and can be different per AP if you chooseset the MAC ID of the other APs.

set the security for the wireless connection between the APs (the security mode and password must be the SAME on all the APs.repeat this setup for all the APs….Lastly. DONT FORGET TO TEST THEM before you hang them up or deploy them. It’s a lot easier to troubleshoot the problem when the piecs in the pizzle are right in front of you.
